Truman Sock Hop
Every year the kids' school has a 'Sock Hop' - basically a family dance the PTA puts on. Our kids love it!
The DJ they get is awesome with the kids.

Great Wall of China
For the Girls Scout's International Day, Kayl's troop did a presentation on China. Kayl's portion was to talk about the Great Wall, and she decided to make an example from Legos...
She had lookouts on the towers...
(They looked a bit like pirates!)

...and a procession of royalty.

cookie booth sales
In addition to the cookies each girl sells themselves, all of the girls are expected to support general troop functions by working at a booth sale. The sales are then split up between those who worked each shift. This year Kayl did well enough in personal sales that she left most of the booth sales for other girls to do.

scooters at Ester Short Park
The kids wanted to ride their scooters, so we went to Ester Short Park downtown.
It has a great looping pathway all the way around - perfect for scooters!
Of course, we were going too slow, so they went out and back - and out and back...
Sean is finally getting the hang of 'gliding'.
Kayl is just an old pro at it.
We stopped at the statue of Mr. Propstra - one of the city's philanthropists and the one who gave a lot of the money for this park. The kids found it interesting that the statue's newspaper actually had his name in the headline!
And then, one more trip around the park...

Girl Scout Cookies - the warehouse
Kayl & mom went and got her cookie orders from the troop 'warehouse'. 300 boxes is a lot of cookies!
Kayl then went about setting up her own 'warehouse', and sorting the boxes into her various orders.
A two-step process, she would make stacks of each type of cookie and then get what she needed for each order.
Sean helped a bunch in bringing her what each person had ordered.
Pretty soon it took up most of the living room...
You can say all the bad things you might want about the cookie sales, but it sure does teach the girls some good skills in sales and management!

Sean's "Be An Expert" report
All of the first & second grade students in Sean's class do a research project called "Be An Expert". You pick a subject you are interested in but know nothing or little about, and then learn enough to be the expert - which involves writing a research paper and then giving a presentation to the class. Sean chose the history of the U.S. Flag...
One of the things he liked the best was that the flag started out with a snake on it! The kids had to make their own presentation materials, so Sean made a bunch of cardboard flags showing the way it looked at many of the steps in history. The students also had to take their research paper (which they turned in) and turn it into a 3-5 minute report with note cards for their use during the presentation.
Sean found it funny that the flag then had England's flag on it. "Wasn't England who they were fighting?"
From a parent's perspective - getting up and giving presentations at this age is awesome! By the time they get old enough for it to matter, they won't be scared to talk to groups.
Sean talked about the early flags, and their lack of rules on the stars and stripes...
..and he particularly liked the one with the stars in a star!
To emphasize the lack of rules, Sean created his own flag that would still have been within the rules as an 'official' U.S. flag in 1846.
Finally, Sean got to the story of how they made rules about how the stars had to go, and how a school-age student designed our current flag.
When the presentation was over, they had to field questions from the audience. The crowd really liked Sean's presentation, and had a lot to ask!
It was hard to choose whose question to answer...!

Kayl baking
As part of one of her Girl Scout badges, Kayl decided to bake some pastries.
First, she learned how to make the dough..
...and shape it the way she wanted.
Then she filled them with meat, vegetables, and the all-important cheese!
And, of course, you need to learn how to close them up properly.
"Uh, what do I do if I put in too much cheese...?"
Hah! There's NEVER too much cheese!!
