So here's today's remembrance: People today worry all too much about spending thousands on having the 'perfect' wedding - and it's un-necessary! Our wedding was perfect, and the total spent on it was around $1500 dollars.
Mary's parents paid for the invitations and postage (which were nice but simple from a local print shop), and her wedding dress (found at a consignment shop with the store tags still on it for $100);
My parents paid for the wedding in their backyard by paying for all of the landscaping I wanted to do, the materials for the gazebo, and for the refreshments which my dad & his sister prepared;
Mary & I bought the rings on clearance at the jewelers (going out of style?), and had a diamond from a necklace my mom gave Mary that her mom had given her added to Mary's wedding band;
The flowers were a wedding gift from a family friend that was a florist; The cake was from a family friend as well; And then a myriad of my cousins came over and did the decorations;
And my favorite part of the story: The morning of the wedding. My 'Uncle Mike' showed up from Southern California (yes, he was invited) with a trunk full of booze - that's right, as in cases! He told us he was in charge of the 'after' party, and rumor has it that later that evening he put my parents to bed and ran the party in our house until the next day! (We were, of course, gone by then...) And the best part: he was neither my uncle, nor was his name Mike (it was actually Mark, but we kids mis-pronounced it from when we were very little) - he was just a good family friend of my grandmothers!!
All-in-all it was about as perfect of a wedding as I can imagine, and no families went broke celebrating our joining.
